A Century of Scouting: Celebrating 100 Years of the Boy Scouts of America will be on Exhibit in Bracken Library through July 16, 2010 on Bracken 2 West. The exhibit will feature Scout documents, photographs, artifacts, and memorabilia from the William “Jack” Spears Boy Scouts of America Records and Photographs Collection. Jack Spears, a prominent Delaware County Scoutmaster and collector of Boy Scout memorabilia, spent many hours researching the local scout summer camp, Camp Redwing. After his death in 2009, his surviving wife, Cindy, donated a portion of his extensive Boy Scouts collection to the Ball State University Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections. Written Legacy: the Writing and Poetry of African American Women will be on display in Archives and Special Collections on the second floor of Bracken Library through April 2010. Celebrate Black History Month and Women's History Month by exploring the writing and poetry of African American women. Archives & Special Collections house a variety of literature by well known African American female authors and poets. Included in the exhibit are Toni Morrison's Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning Song of Solomon; the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks, who was named Poet Laureate consultant in Poetry to the Library of congress; and the writings of actress, playwright, director, autobiographer, and poet, Maya Angelou. Free Trial for Historical Statistics of the United States

Historical Statistics of the United States provides electronic access to the thoroughly revised edition of the five-volume print reference work of the same title. It is fully searchable and downloadable. Topics range from migration and health to crime and the Confederate States of America. Topics are placed in historical context by a recognized expert in the field. Historical Statistics of the United States is available from the Databases page. The trial ends March 26th.

Free Trial for Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000
Women and Social Movements in the United States is a resource for students and scholars of U.S. history and U.S. women's history. Organized around the history of women in social movements in the U.S. between 1600 and 2000, this collection seeks to advance scholarly debates and understanding about U.S. history generally at the same time that it makes the insights of women's history accessible to teachers and students at universities, colleges, and high schools. The collection currently includes 91 document projects and archives with more than 3,600 documents and 150,000 pages of additional full-text documents, and more than 2,060 primary authors. It also includes book, film, and website reviews, notes from the archives, and teaching tools. Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600-2000 is available from the Databases page. Free Trial for Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works

Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is a searchable collection of real transcripts of therapy and counseling sessions and first-person narratives. It also contains reference works. New material is added biweekly. The database currently includes approximately 63,600 pages of material, including more than 16,000 pages of session transcripts, more than 22,000 pages of client narratives, and more than 24,000 pages of secondary reference material. Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives, and Reference Works is available from the Databases page. The trial ends December 30th.

Free Trial for Counseling and Therapy in Video

Counseling and Therapy in Video is an online collection of video available for the study of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling. This current release includes 285 videos totaling roughly 314 hours. Counseling and Therapy in Video is available from the Databases page. The trial ends December 30th.

You can keep an eye on your print quota using the Check Print Balance link located in the red box in the lower right corner of the Student Virtual Library page. Login using your BSU username and password and the page will tell you how many pages you have printed, how many pages you have remaining, the date and time of your last print job. It will also provide a log of print jobs for the semester. The information is updated daily.

Dr. Charles E. Braker Orchid Photographs will be on exhibit in Bracken Library through December 30, 2009. This exhibit features the photographs of retired Purdue University professor Dr. Charles E. Braker. The photographs in this collection are the result of Bracker's passion for orchids and photography. Also showcased in this exhibit is the rare four volume edition of Reichenbachia, a 19th century series of books which contain color plates of orchids named after orchidologist, Heinrich Gustave Reichenbach. These books were published in two series, each volume dedicated to a particular queen or empress beginning with Queen Victoria and ending with the Queen of the Belgians. 300 of the top orchid images may also be found in the University Libraries Digital Media Repository. IntelliConnect Has Been Added to the Databases page

IntelliConnect replaces the CCH Internet Tax Research Network database. It provides federal, state, and international tax information. It also includes articles from professional journals and legal information including cases, regulations, and laws.

It easy to use ilocker in the library to save a paper you are working on or an image you are scanning. The public computers in the Ball State University Libraries are configured to map the computer you are logging into to your ilocker account. This means that you can save a file to your ilocker without having to log into your ilocker account. All you have to do us click on File or the Microsoft Office button in upper left corner of any Office 2007 application. Next you click on Save as. Then click on the arrow next the Save in box and select your username on 'ilocker.bsu.edu\users' (W:) and then Save.

Online Access to Books Increased

You may have noticed something new this semester in your searching of CardCat, our library's online catalog. If a book in our collection has a digital equivalent on Google Books, the book will be displayed in the CardCat record. This allows you to read excerpts and in some cases view the entire book online. This greatly enhances access to library materials.

Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex Dedication

The Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex dedication ceremony was held on August 17, 2009. The ceremony included remarks from Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora, Vice President for Information Technology Phil Repp,
Dean of University Libraries Arthur Hafner, and Mr. Martin Schwartz.

The Schwartz Digital Complex is a space designed to connect people to digital media assets and special collections available through the University Libraries. The space also includes areas for collaboration and access to televised news from around the world. This technology-rich facility in Bracken Library was made possible by a generous gift from Martin Schwartz in honor of his late wife, Helen.

Instructional Services offers library instruction sessions designed around your students' class assignments. Subject-specific sessions are designed to help them locate and evaluate relevant resources. Readers Guide Retrospective, covering a wide range of subject areas, is an excellent source for studying U.S. popular culture in the 20th century. It will help you locate articles from about 375 different general interest periodicals published from 1890 through 1982. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Biography Index Retrospective Has Been Added to the Databases Page
Biography Index Retrospective, contains citations to biographical resources for about 300,000 people. It indexes biographical resources published from 1946 through 1983. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Education Index Retrospective Has Been Added to the Databases Page
Education Index Retrospective will help you locate articles published from 1929 through 1983 from 500 journals, magazines, and yearbooks. This database is the electronic equivalent of the print title Education Index. The article text, online or in print, can be found using MultiLink from within the database.

Many of the databases on the Ball State University Libraries Articles and Databases page use link resolver technology which allows you to locate the full text of articles not already in full text in the database you are searching. We have named our link resolver "MultiLink." When you are searching in a database you may see the MultiLink button on a query results list. When you click on the button MultiLink looks to see if this article is available in full text in another database. If so, it will take you to the full text of the article. If not, it will allow you to look in CardCat to see if we have a print subscription to the periodical in which the article appears. If the article is not available in print or online you can do an interlibrary loan for the article. MultiLink also gives you the option to do an interlibrary loan and will even fill out the form for you.

The Periodical/Reserves Counter Will No Longer Be Staffed

Beginning May 9th the services offered at the Periodical/Reserves desk will be offered at the Main Circulation desk on the east side of the lobby of Bracken Library. The Main Circulation desk will become the service desk for checking out books, checking out reserve items, placing items on reserves, and picking up interlibrary loan items. Assistance with printer 6, the color printer, and microfilm machines may be obtained in room BL111 which is across from Printer 6.

Archetype: Future Designers Inspired by the Past will be on display outside Archives and Special Collections on the second floor and on the east side of the first floor of Bracken Library through June 15th. The exhibit that showcases student artwork inspired by pop culture and the expressive graphic style of the '60s.

This exhibit is in collaboration with Associate Professors Christine Satory and Sam Minor from the Department of Art, and junior visual communication majors. The exhibition is meant to allow students to display their artwork to inform and educate. Items to be featured from the Archives and Special Collections will be student publications; poetry; highlights from Robert Kennedy's Muncie visit; and graphic design from the 1960's.

Contemporary Authors Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Find information about current writers of fiction, general nonfiction, poetry, and drama. The database also includes prominent print and broadcast journalists, editors, photojournalists, syndicated cartoonists, screenwriters, television scriptwriters, and other media people. This resource provides information on modern authors, including those who were active prior to 1960 and whose works continue to influence contemporary literature. This database has been made available through INSPIRE, a collection of academic databases and other information resources that can be accessed at no cost by Indiana residents. INSPIRE is a service of the Indiana State Library and is supported by the Indiana General Assembly through Build Indiana Funds, the Institute of Museums and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act and in partnership with Academic Libraries of Indiana.

Small Business Resource Center Has Been Added to the Databases Page

This database provides access to nearly 200 journals and magazines that cover all major areas of starting, operating and maintaining a business from financing, management, marketing, accounting, taxes and more. It also includes business plans. This database has also been made available through INSPIRE.

Psychiatry Online Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Psychiatry online contains the six journals published by American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. (APPI) as well as the DSM Library, including the DSM-IV-TR. The six journal titles are The American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Focus: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry, Academic Psychiatry, The Journal of Neuropsychiatry & Clinical Neurosciences, Psychosomatics, and Psychiatric News.

Ball State University Libraries' Has a New Research Tool

MultiSearch, new this semester, allows you to simultaneously search 50 databases including our libraries' catalog, CardCat. Using a single search box you can search either all 50 databases or limit your search to databases in one or more of 15 subject areas. Come to one of our short workshop to find out more. Philosopher's Index Database Has a New Look

Access to Philosopher's Index is now through EBSCOhost. The EBSCOhost search interface is intuitive and includes links to the full text of articles in addition to FindIt.

Our Ask a Librarian service now includes text messaging in addition to Live Chat, e-mail, and in person assistance at the reference desk or by appointment. You can text us by sending a message to 265010. Start your message with libtxt:. This will initiate a live chat session with a librarian at the Reference Desk. Remember that standard text charges from your provider may apply. This service is available the same hours as live chat. Chat hours

Here is a tip. Preface your first message with “libtxt:”, after you send the initial message, hit “reply” to the response message that you receive from the reference desk, then you will not need to insert the “libtxt:” before the text of subsequent messages during that chat session.

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month and explore the multitude of resources available on Native American history by visiting Archives and Special Collections on the second floor of Bracken Library. This exhibit is in collaboration with the Anthropology Department, Geospatial Resources & Maps, and Educational Resources. Items featured in the exhibit include maps featuring Delaware settlements along the White River in Indiana and Indians of North America, photographs from the Miami Indian photo collection, documents from the Indian Reserves Collection, historical texts documenting Native Americans in the U.S., a copy of Richard Greens booklet on the Delaware Indians in Muncie, a rawhide rattle and peace pipe from Educational Resources, and pottery shards and arrowheads from the Anthropology Department. This trial database provides access to the DSM-IV-TR, seven journal titles, and six textbooks. The username is ballstateedu and the password is psychiatry989. PsychiatryOnline is available from the Databases page. The trial ends November 20th.

Garnett Mystery Collection Available at Bracken Library

The Garnett Mystery Collection was made available for check out early in October. This collection of more than 1,800 mysteries by authors such as P.D. James, Laura Childs, and Ellis Peters, is located near the Best Sellers collection on the east side of the lobby. An additional 600 titles will join them for a total 2,400 titles.

Next time you are in Bracken Library you might stop by the Bookmark Cafe, conveniently located on the East side of the lobby. A cup of coffee or some pastry might make your time in the library even more enjoyable. The cafe is open 7:30 a.m. to 9:30p.m. Monday through Thursday and Fridays 7:30a.m to 5p.m. The cafe also serves salad, sandwiches, and bottled beverages.

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month and explore the multitude of resources available on Native American history by visiting Archives and Special Collections on the second floor of Bracken Library. This exhibit is in collaboration with the Anthropology Department, Geospatial Resources & Maps, and Educational Resources. Items featured in the exhibit include maps featuring Delaware settlements along the White River in Indiana and Indians of North America, photographs from the Miami Indian photo collection, documents from the Indian Reserves Collection, historical texts documenting Native Americans in the U.S., a copy of Richard Greens booklet on the Delaware Indians in Muncie, a rawhide rattle and peace pipe from Educational Resources, and pottery sherds and arrowheads from the Anthropology Department. New Look for the Ball State University Libraries Databases Page

The databases page has several new features which are designed to assist the user in identifying databases for their research need. Tabs have been added which allows users to navigate between database lists. There is a General tab which includes multidisciplinary databases, i.e. those that cover many subjects. The Subject tab displays databases on each of 15 subjects. The All tab is an A-Z list of all of our databases. The Reference tabs lists databases whose content is primarily dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographical information, etc. The Subject and General tabs feature a list of frequently used databases. A link to our chat service has been added as well.

Explore the history and memories of Ball State from 1918-2008. Sport Discus is Now Available with Full Text

Sport Discus now includes full text. Sport Discus is a key database for sports, sports medicine, and physical education. It provides indexing and full text for more than 2,000 journals.

Loan Period Extended for DVD's and Laptops

Students, faculty, staff, and Academy Students may now borrow DVD's for 4 days. Digital equipment, such as laptops, projectors, digital cameras, etc. may now be kept for 6 hours. The equipment may be renewed online twice, or returned to Educational Resources by the closing time of the same calendar day, whichever comes first.

University Computing Services Lab Closed

The University Computing Services Lab in Bracken Library has been closed. In the winter of 2008-2009 the area will re-open as the "Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Global Digital Complex." The complex will provide state-of-the-art interactive equipment for collaboration.

Free Trial for Images of the American Civil War: Photographs, Posters, and Ephemera

At completion, the database will present 75,000 images drawn from archives around the country, documenting the camp, battle, prison, and hospital experiences of Union and Confederate soldiers of all ranks and the civilian and political life in cities and towns close to and far from the front lines of war. The database also includes graphical content such as envelopes, song sheets, recruiting posters, imprints, and cartoons give users the ability to research how wartime America illustrated their times visually. Art Museum Image Gallery contains high-quality, digital documentation of works of art from around the world. Cultures and time periods represented range from contemporary art, Native American and Inuit art, to ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian works, along with Japanese and Chinese works. The database includes numerous multimedia over 150,000 images.

GreenFILE Has Been Added to the Databases Page

GreenFILE provides access to Ecology information, drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health, and technology. It indexes more than 600 journal titles in the fields of Science, Health, Law, Technology from the early 20th century to present. The database also includes government documents.

Oxford Music Online Has Been Added to the Databases Page

This database contains the online version of The Oxford Dictionary of Music, The Oxford Companion to Music, and The Encyclopedia of Popular Music. Also included is the online version of Grove Music Online. All entries of this classic scholarly encyclopedia of music are peer-reviewed.

AltLaw is a free, full-text searchable database of Supreme Court and Federal Appellate cases. It covers Supreme Court cases back to 1759. The database includes Appeals court cases from 40's to the present. The database was created by Columbia Law School and Colorado Law School.

Gartner Research Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Gartner offers the combined efforts of 1,200 research analysts and consultants in the field of information technology who advise executives in 75 countries every day, publishing tens of thousands of pages of original research annually and answer 200,000 client questions every year.

Scirus Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Scirus indexes more than 450 million scientific items. The database searches journal content, scientists' homepages, courseware, pre-print server material, patents and institutional repository, and website information.

The Ball State University Libraries Now Lend Video Cameras

Students, faculty, and staff can now borrow a video camera from the University libraries Educational Resources Collection. The Sony PD170 DV camcorder comes with a wireless microphone and associated peripherals. The cameras can be checked out for a four-hour period, with up to two renewals. America History and Life is Now an EBSCO Database

We now have access to America: History & Life through EBSCOhost instead of ABC Clio. One of the benefits of the switch is the inclusion of full text in the search results. Users no longer have to rely on FindIt. Additionally, the EBSCO interface is one that many users will be familiar with. ABC Clio announced the sale of America: History & Life to EBSCO last June.

A New Look for Web of Science

Web of Science has a new search interface. Web of Science says the new streamlined design was based on input from users and months of testing, now looking more like that of other databases. Users may find this interface more intuitive.

Dual Screen Monitors Added to 40 Public Computers

Forty Bracken 1-East Public PC stations have been enhanced by the addition of dual monitors. The additional monitor doubles the amount of desktop allowing the user to open multiple windows simultaneously. For example, a student may have a journal article open on one monitor and Word 2007 on the other. At present dual monitor stations are also available in the Science-Health Science Library. The Geospatial Resources and Map Collection has had dual monitors for 4 years. Recently dual monitors have been added to many offices in the library, increasing employee productivity.

Come see John Steinbeck scholar, Dr. Mimi Reisel Gladstein’s presentation, “John Steinbeck and WWII: Fighting to Serve His Country.” Dr. Gladstein is Professor of English and Theater Arts at the University of Texas at El Paso, where she has chaired both departments. The event is a part of the new Steinbeck Lecture Series founded by Dr. and Mrs. Tetsumaro Hayashi in honor of Dr. Richard W. and Mrs. Dorothy Burkhardt and Dr. John J and Mrs. Angeline R. Pruis, whose generosity has helped Ball State University to honor internationally prominent Steinbeck Scholars and educators for nearly 30 years.

Westlaw Campus Research Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Westlaw Campus Research is an online database that provides a comprehensive collection of news, business, and law information for students. In addition to over 700 law journals, Westlaw also includes; articles from newspapers, magazines, trade journals, company info, broadcast transcripts, and international publications.

Lexis-Nexis Academic Databases Have a New Look
Lexis-Nexis Academic databases have a new search interface which adds additional functionality and simplifies use. It is now easier to limit your search to subsets of sources. For example, you can search Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois newspapers in one search. Similarly, in Lexis-Nexis Academic Legal Research you can search the full text of court cases in all states, multiple states, or individual states. This was not possible with the previous search interface. New content has been added as well. Lexis-Nexis Academic Business now includes Company Dossier, which gives a snapshot of the company, corporate hierarchy, news stories, legal information, and financials.

International Interior Design Association Knowledge Center Has Been Added to the Databases Page
International Interior Design Association Knowledge Center is a Database of interior design-related articles as well as a daily news feed from Interior Design. It indexes articles from trade publications, newspapers, academic journals, and industry news. The database also contains information about continuing education courses approved by the Interior Design Continuing Education Council.

Morningstar Library Edition Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Morningstar is now available from the Web allowing you to find statistical reports on more than 10,000 mutual funds. This database was previously only available in Bracken library.

Xreferplus has a New Name

The publishers of xrefereplus have announced a new name for this reference resource atabase. It is now called Credo. The database still allows you to cross search 100 dictionaries and encyclopedias that cover a wide a range of subject.

Next time you are in Bracken Library you might stop by the Bookmark Cafe, conveniently located on the East side of the lobby. A cup of coffee or some pastry might make your time in the library even more enjoyable. The cafe is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cafe also serves salad, sandwiches, and bottled beverages.

Free Trial for Project Euclid

Project Euclid is a non-profit initiative of the Cornell University Library which provides full text access to journals in theoretical and applied mathematics and statistics. The project was launched in 2003 to advance affordable scholarly communication. Project Euclid is available from the Databases page. The trial ends June 15th.

ReferenceUSA is a useful resource for residential and business phone numbers and may serve as an alternative to Web sites such as AnyWho.com. Reference USA provides phone listings for 210 million U.S. residents and 14 million businesses. It allows you to search for companies by location, industry, number of employees, sales volume, and many other criteria. The database not only provides directory information for companies but other valuable information, such as contact names, SIC codes, and much more. ReferenceUSA is available from the Ball State University Libraries Databases page which makes more than 150 databases available to Ball State faculty, staff, and students.

CumInCAD Has Been Added to the Databases Page

According to CumInCAD, "CumInCAD includes bibliographic information about over 8,100 records from journals and conferences such as ACADIA, CAADRIA, eCAADe, SiGraDi, CAAD futures, DDSS and others. All papers include full abstracts. Full texts, in PDF, of some 5,400 papers are also available. A separate index of some 1,000 papers in Spanish language are maintained."

Pidgeon Audiovisual Digital Architectural Library Has Been Added to the

Bracken Library offers color printing from any of its 350 public stations. This popular service costs just 25 cents per page. Instructions on using this service can be found at the Reference Desk and the Periodical Reserves Desk in Bracken Library. Poster-sized color printing can be done in the Geospatial Center and Map Collection (GCMC) in BL 224. The cost is $6 for posters 36" or less. Larger posters can be printed at additional cost. The GCMC is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

PILOTS Has Been Added to the Databases Page

PILOTS indexes literature on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health consequences of exposure to traumatic events. The goal of the PILOTS database is to include citations to all literature on PTSD and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events, without disciplinary, linguistic, or geographical limitations, and to offer both current and
retrospective coverage. PILOTS database is not limited to literature on PTSD among veterans and is produced by the National Center for PTSD.

Computing Reviews Has Been Added to the Databases Page

Computing Reviews provides access to current research, theory and applications in subdisciplines of computing via the review medium. CR compiles expert, unbiased critical reviews of current publications of note in computing. Every signed review consists entirely of the reviewer's opinions which may or may not coincide with those of the editors or publisher of Computing Reviews.

e-Duke Scholarly Collection Has Been Added to the Databases Page

The e-Duke Scholarly Collection includes online access to twenty-nine Duke humanities and social science journals.

Oxford African American Studies Center Has Been Added to the Databases
Page

The Oxford African American Studies Center provides five major encyclopedias and content from eighteen additional reference sources from Oxford University Press. It also includes approximately 100 primary source documents with commentaries, 1,000 images with an ongoing image research program, over 200 charts, tables and graphs, maps, timelines, and learning resources for students and teachers.

SRDS Has Been Added to the Databases Page

The SRDS database of media rates and information claims to be "the largest and most comprehensive in the world—cataloging more than 100,000 U.S. and international media properties . . . verifying each listing up to 20 times per year and making more than 21,000 listing updates every month."

RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic software package that enables you to organize your research, include citations while you write your paper, build a bibliography in a variety of formats, import references from many data sources, and create bibliographies in different document formats (Word, RTF, HTML, etc.). The Friends of the Alexander M. Bracken Library will hold its annual dinner and meeting on March 28, 2007, at the Ball State University Alumni Center. A reception begins at 6:00 followed by dinner at 6:30. The Kirkham Lecture following the dinner will be a panel discussion on The Middletown Digital Oral History Collection by Warren Vander Hill, Hurley Goodall, and John Weakland. The Archives and Special Collections Research Center will celebrate Black History Month with an exhibit of photographs, documents, and other materials that tell the story of the Civil Rights Movement in Muncie. Bringing the Dream to Middletown: Muncie's Civil Rights Movement, 1955-1975 will focus on the struggle to make Dr. Martin Luther King's dream of a just society a reality in Middletown USA. The exhibit will highlight the contributions of key individuals and chart major events in the local movement.
